Suns snippets: D.J. Strawberry traded & Donaghy's role in a Suns playoff victory

A couple of noteworthy items for the Phoenix Suns came across the wires today. First, in what could be considered the opposite of a blockbuster deal, the Suns have traded 2nd-year player D.J. Strawberry to the Houston Rockets in exchange for rookie Sean Singletary (who was just recently traded to the Rockets from the Kings in the Ron Artest deal). I was a bit surprised to hear this news though, as I was under the impression that the Suns organization thought highly of Strawberry and particularly liked his hustle on the defensive end. The Suns must see some potential in Singletary, and think that he will help shore up the point guard position behind Steve Nash and Goran Dragic. In college, Singletary was selected to the All ACC First Team three times, and is the only player in ACC history with 2,000 career points, 500 assists, 400 rebounds and 200 steals.

In other Suns news, a Phoenix prosecutor is looking to get his hands on federal files in the investigation of the notorious ex-NBA official Tim Donaghy. His motive - to determine whether Donaghy broke any Arizona laws while officiating two Phoenix Suns-Los Angeles Lakers playoff games in 2007. If you remember correctly, the Suns ended up winning that series 4-1. It will be interesting to see what, if anything, comes out of this investigation. Until then, I'll stay hidden in a shroud of denial.

Stu writing about the Suns?! I had to double check who wrote this, haha. I was a bit surprised they traded Strawberry too, but I guess they want a couple of options to back up Nash. Who knows which of the first year NBA players, Singletary and Dragic, will make the biggest impact. Singletary was the only Division 1 player to rank in the top 40 in scoring and assists and he's a four year college player which hopefully makes him NBA ready.

Donaghy who? :(

I know, where's Max when you need him? Seems like a pretty inconsequential trade right now, but who knows what the future holds?!

I heard this was primarily to get a good body and point guard for practice sessions. It's rumored that he will groom his play and shooting for the Suns NBDL affiliate this upcoming season. There's no talk that this poses a threat to Dragic being Nash's backup, but play always speaks for itself. And as a Suns fan, you gotta love that Phoenix is getting some point guard depth. Nash really wore down during the second half of the season and playoffs and there's a desire to play him much less during the regular season to spell him for the playoffs. Also, this will most likely free up Barbosa from point guard duties so he can focus on what many refer to as "no improvement" on his defensive potential. But he's also been rumored in trades alot this offseason, but I think Phoenix should wait until midseason before they assess the affects of their moves this offseason. These latest moves to improve their backcourt will likely take pressure off key players from last year such as: Nash, Barbosa, Hill, Diaw and surprisingly Shaq who were all asked to distribute the ball, because their lack of point guard depth. Ya I probably should have made a post...But you can always be sure I'll have an opinion about the Suns, even if a little bias.

You also have to like this move for Houston, who already had depth at point guard but added a player heralded for his physique, strength and defensive abilities. They're focused on putting a skilled, but defensive minded team together and they're more recent moves have proven that Houston is gonna be a great team this coming season if they can stay healthy, which has been a problem for their two stars.

Damn Max! You probably SHOULD have made a post! Good points though. I think it makes sense for both teams, and it sounds like Singletary could develop in to a serviceable pg.

You're right about the Rockets, they have been overloaded at PG. This move definitely makes sense for their defensive-minded game.
